NORTH PORT — Last year when smart meters were being installed in North Port, resident Sherry Smart felt so strongly against them that she lobbied Florida Power & Light officials, who postponed the install at her home until this year.

Smart is among a small percentage of Floridians — about 25,000 — who disagree with the mandatory smart-meter technology in all homes, and have opted out of the install.
