Mote: More turtles, fewer dollars

A female loggerhead sea turtle comes ashore to make a nest at Caspersen Beach. Turtles generally nest at night. Mote Marine Laboratory will not be able to stake out and monitor as many turtle nesting sites this year due to budget cuts.
Funding cuts at Mote Marine Laboratory and increased sea turtle nesting will lead to some changes in the sea turtle nest monitoring program.
“We are changing the way we monitor nests because of the increase in nesting in this area,” Mote spokesman Nadine Slimak said Tuesday. “It will be more of an indexing system, the way they do it on the East Coast.
