Gerardo Reyes said he began his quest for better working conditions when his boss treated him very poorly. We said, Were not going to work for somebody who thinks we are machines, that we dont need to eat, that we dont need to be able to feed ourselves.
All Gerardo Reyes wanted was a few cooking utensils.
Reyes wasn’t unusual among his fellow migrant workers, picking tomatoes in Immokalee for $19 a week, most of which went toward paying his boss for rent.
