NORTH PORT — The scent of grilled and roasted meats wafted across the parking lot of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church Saturday on the first day of its third annual Serbian Food Festival.

Inside the church hall diners tried shish kebabs; potato salad; Serbian-style stuffed cabbage; spit-roasted lamb, pork and chicken; and chevapi — a seasoned, case-less sausage made from beef and pork — served with raw onions in a homemade Serbian version of flatbread and topped with creamy kajmak, a cross between cream cheese and butter, all made from scratch. And then there was a whole table of homemade baked goods.
