Bicyclist killed on U.S. 41
NORTH PORT — A 65-year-old bicyclist was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a car at U.S. 41 at De Leon Drive, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Around 9:35 p.m., Robert F. Huffman of North Port was riding a bicycle west on U.S. 41 in the inside (left) lane, approaching the intersection with De Leon Drive, near Ortiz Boulevard. Huffman was wearing a helmet and had a headlight and tail lights on the bike, an FHP report shows. A 2003 Toyota Celica driven by Caitlyn Jo Tundro, 21, of North Port, was traveling behind Huffman and struck the rear of the bicycle. The impact caused the bike and Huffman to go up and over the car, landing in the paved median break on 41, the report shows. Huffman died at the scene. Tundro, who was wearing a seat belt, had minor injuries. Charges are pending the results of a blood-alcohol test, the report shows.
