SARASOTA COUNTY — Authorities arrested a homeless man Friday in Warm Mineral Springs after DNA evidence tied him to the 2003 murder of a German citizen who was living in the United States on a tourist visa at the time of her death, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

John Alan Mellquist, 54, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the slaying, which started as a missing person’s case in October 2003, after Anneliese Schweickardt vanished. Authorities found Mellquist living in a tent in the woods near Ortiz Boulevard and U.S. 41 in unincorporated Sarasota County Friday and he was taken into custody on a warrant, according to a sheriff’s report, but Schweickardt’s body has not been recovered.
