Fat cats, corpulent canines cost plenty in vet bills

Overweight pets can strain their owners' pocketbooks. Marilu Lippert holds Whitey, a fat cat who has been dieting and is down to 19 pouunds. Jorge Villada holds Hannah, who came to Suncoast Humane Society weighing 63 pounds and was adopted. Three months later the family said they couldn't afford her. She was surrendered weighing 72 pounds. Hannah is now on a diet.

ENGLEWOOD — An estimated 54 percent of dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese, according to a study released by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention.

Experts blame the owners.
