Police: Man chokes officer, tries escape in ocean
DAYTONA BEACH (AP) — A man Daytona Beach Police say choked an officer before trying to flee by swimming in the ocean has surrendered.
Police say 29-year-old Samuel Scott is being treated in the hospital for a cut to his head. He is expected to be charged with attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Scott was “actively engaged” when officers responded to a report of domestic violence at his apartment Sunday. Officers tried to use a Taser on Scott, who then struck an officer in the eye and tried to choke him.
Police say Scott then dove through a bedroom window, ran to the beach and swam about 50 to 60 yards before returning to shore.
