SARASOTA COUNTY — The Sarasota County Commission approved by a 4-1 margin Monday night the tentative fiscal year 2013 budget and a higher millage rate that would raises taxes slightly.

The millage for the tentative $896 million budget has an increase of 0.0528 for Mosquito Control that commissioners adopted July 11. The tentative millage for FY 2013 is 4.0512, up from 3.9984. “Overall the only piece of the county millage rate that’s going up is due to the mosquito control district,” said county budget manager Steve Botelho. “That is the only increase that any resident of Sarasota County could expect from the budget that the board is approving.” One mill equals $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value. Under the current 3.9984 millage rate, the owner of a home assessed at $100,000, less a $50,000 homestead exemption, pays $199.92 in county property taxes. Under the higher millage rate, that same homeowner would pay $202.56. The figure doesn’t include city, School Board or special assessment taxes. The typical county tax bill impact on the owner of a $200,000 home would be about $11 more. Commission Chairwoman Christine Robinson was the only dissenting vote on the tentative budget and the millage rate increase. She also voted against it in July with Commissioner Jon Thaxton, who was in favor of the increase Tuesday. “I voted against the mosquito rate increase before, so I had to vote against it now,” Robinson said. “And since I voted against the employee bonuses (the commission approved a $1,000 one-time bonus to county employees last month), I had to vote no, since that’s part of the budget.” The County Commission will hold a final budget hearing at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Sarasota County Administration Center, 1660 Ringling Blvd.
