Smoke alarm saves man who fell asleep while cooking

A home on the 6600 block of Myrtlewood Avenue in North Port is surrounded by caution tape Friday after a fire started in the kitchen area Thursday evening. A man at the home began cooking, then fell asleep. He awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm.
NORTH PORT — The smell of soot was still strong Friday afternoon at a Myrtlewood Avenue residence following a fire Thursday in which the homeowner escaped unscathed.
According to North Port Fire Rescue, the man was preparing his dinner around 8 p.m. Thursday at the home and decided to take a nap for a few minutes while waiting for his food to finish cooking.
