Report: 20 percent of county kids below poverty level
One in every five children in Sarasota County is living below the poverty level, according to a demographic profile report released by the county.
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau show that between 2000 and 2010, the percentage of those under the age of 18 living in poverty jumped from 12.9 percent to 21.5 percent. The percentage of people between the ages of 18 and 64 living in poverty nearly doubled, rising from 7.9 percent in 2000 to 15.2 percent in 2010. The percentage of those 65 and older living in poverty remained constant, at 4.4 percent in 2000 and 2010.
