Manatees delight beach-goers

Fourteen suitors wait in line in shallow water off Sand Dollar Lane on Manasota Key for a chance to mate. Manatees are especially vulnerable. Boaters and beach goers are asked to watch them from at least 100 feet away. Coming any closer may disrupt the animals’ natural behavior or put people in harm’s way.
Love is not necessarily in the air, but it’s definitely in local waters.
Kris Hleuka photographed a cluster of manatees Sunday in the Gulf off Sand Dollar Lane. The manatees spent much of Sunday courting in the shallows of Manasota Key. Kris’s husband, Jim, spotted them in the late afternoon, and the manatees remained until 7 or 8 p.m. Sunday, but were gone by Monday morning.
