Vernell Sanders Strickland
Vernell Sanders Strickland, 86, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.
She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and dear friend to many. Although Vernell spent much of her life in Florida, she felt blessed to be born a Texan. Over the last few years her memories started to fade, but she never forgot how proud she was to be raised on the biggest ranch in Bell County, Texas. Vernell loved the simple things in life, grandbabies, laughing, good food, friends, puzzles and garage sales. She was kind, compassionate, and always listened with a nonjudgmental ear. Vernell wanted to help in any way she could, and her family will miss the homemade soup when they were sick, and hearing her sing and hum to “Darktown Strutters Ball” or the “Yellow Rose of Texas.” She left a permanent mark on those who loved her, and she will never be forgotten.
Vernell was mother to Martha Cole, Roger Byrd, Justin Byrd and William “Billy” Skinner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Braxton Strickland of Punta Gorda, Fla.
There will be a private graveside service, and a celebration of life is being planned. You may express your condolences to the family at www.lemonbayfh.com.
Arrangements are by Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
