Setback for landfill
The developers behind a proposal to build a landfill in eastern Charlotte County suffered a setback Monday after members of the county’s planning and zoning board voted unanimously to reject an application to amend the county’s comprehensive plan.
Before a standing-room-only audience of environmental experts, county staff and residents opposed to a Class 1 regional landfill being proposed on a 554-acre tract of agriculture land 3.5 miles north of Bermont Road and 6.6 miles east of State Road 31, the board shot down a request by Calusa Growers LC to amend a map in the county’s comprehensive plan that would essentially lift one of the restrictions that prohibits the development of a landfill, among other things, on the site.
