Anne Stolz Day, 95, of North Port, Fla., and formerly of Elyria, Ohio, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at home in North Port.

She was born and raised in Elyria, where she worked as a secretary when she met her future husband on a train as he shipped out for military service in Europe during World War II. They corresponded throughout his tour of duty and were married in 1946, after his return to civilian life. They raised their large family in Ohio, and retired to North Port in 1978.

Anne was known for her sunny disposition and ready laugh, as well as for her devotion to the Catholic faith and her volunteerism. A member of San Pedro Catholic Church since 1978, she was also a longtime member of the Ladies Guild and was personally responsible for making more than 16,000 rosaries for export to foreign missions. She also spent many years helping to wash church laundry and running bingo. Over the years Anne donated more than 10 gallons of blood, and regularly gave money to countless charitable causes. For many years, she served as a volunteer at the voting booth and ran errands for elderly friends who didn’t drive. She served as Secretary for her bowling league for decades, and bowled her highest game ever (237 with seven strikes in a row!) in her 80s, having to give up the sport because of a hip replacement. Anne loved watching televised sports, particularly football and tennis, and did word puzzles every day. Members of her extended family were frequent recipients of articles and coupons clipped specifically for them, as well as greeting cards that she often made herself or recycled from other cards. Her upbeat presence and personal attentions will be sorely missed.

Anne is survived by her sisters, Sr. Ursula Stolz of O’Fallon, Mo., Sr. Mary Stolz of Maryknoll, N.Y., and Cecelia Alten of Ontario, Canada; daughters, Bernadette Day of Lakewood, Ohio, Alicia (Gregory) Slempa of Charleston, S.C., Paula (Patrick) Powers of Elyria, Martha (Donald) Boesel of Asheville, N.C., Germaine (Jerry) McGraw of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Mary (James) Foster of North Port; sons, Gregory (Mary) Day of Copper Hill, Md., and Peter (Joni) Day of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary B. Dietz and William Stolz; her husband of 42 years, Burton Deleon Day; sister, Florence Romer; brother, the Rev. Joseph G. Stolz; and her grandson, Matthew K. Day.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at San Pedro Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park.
