Alice Dever, 91, a longtime North Port, Fla., resident, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2012, at the home of her daughter.

She was born Alice Zatko in Salem, Ohio, in 1921.

During World War II, Alice moved to Bridgeport, Conn., to help the war effort by working at Sikorsky Aircraft. It was while working there that she met her husband Frank Dever. After their marriage in 1945, the Devers lived in Bridgeport, where they raised their four children. The Devers moved to North Port in 1979, and Alice became active in the North Port community. She helped adults learn to read with Literacy Volunteers, and she volunteered in the public schools. Alice also joined the Allamanda Garden Club, and took great pride in developing her Florida-Friendly garden. She joined the Red Hatters and loved to socialize with her neighbors. Alice loved spending most of her time at Lutheran Church of the Living Waters. She was a member of WELCA, a national Lutheran women’s organization. Alice was a member of North Port Cares, and helped organize The Salvation Army’s “Dinner for the Hungry” at the church. She was an active member of “The Cutups,” a quilting group that makes quilts for Lutheran World Relief, and knitted hats for newborns to donate to hospitals. Alice helped provide respite care at “A Special Time,” and organized the church’s annual Rummage Sale for many years. She attended several Bible Study groups and a Wellness group at the church. In addition, Alice was a greeter on Sundays, organized refreshments at Coffee Hour and for memorial services, and was a member of the Prayer Chain. A friend wrote, “I will most remember her loving, caring ways and her big smile when she greeted me on Sunday mornings. She loved her church and served it well.”

She is survived by her daughters, Peggy Bruner and Patricia (Don) Beers; son, Daniel Dever; sister, Helen Powers; grandchildren, Chris Beers, Timothy Beers and Ceara Dever; and several nieces and nephews. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Frank D. Dever; son, William; and eight brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at Lutheran Church of the Living Waters, 12475 Chancellor Blvd., Port Charlotte, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to: Lutheran Church of the Living Waters Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 8064, North Port, FL 34290.

Arrangements are by National Cremation Society.
