Groups hook up to preserve tarpon in harbor

Their Latin name is Megalops atlanticus. They’ve been around since prehistoric times and can live an amazing 80 years, reaching lengths of more than 8 feet and weighing upward of 300 pounds. Anglers call them the silver king. Because of their incredible strength and fighting spirit, they are a much sought-after saltwater game fish in the state.

They are tarpon. And Charlotte Harbor, specifically Boca Grande Pass, is the tarpon capital of the world. Every year, residential fishermen alone pump millions into the local economy. Tarpon are prize catches.
