Plummeting temperatures this weekend have led to cold-weather shelters opening for those in need, including one in North Port, officials reported Friday.

Sarasota and Charlotte County emergency managers coordinated with the American Red Cross, theĀ Salvation Army and community faith-based partners to provide the shelters for the public. Shelters will open at 9 p.m. Saturday and again at 7 p.m. Sunday at the following locations: New Hope Community Church, 5600 S. Biscayne Drive, North Port, where hot soup and cots will be provided for those seeking shelter; Center of Hope 1216 E. Venice Ave., Venice; and Salvation Army-Center of Hope, 1400 10th St., Sarasota. Temperatures are predicted to fall into the low 30s both Saturday and Sunday nights, warming back to seasonal levels on Monday.
