Minnie Gleazler, an early Englewood school teacher, stands on the long pier that went out into Lemon Bay from the Lampp Hotel, which is in the background. Although the hotel catered mostly to wealthy sportsmen, it is thought Minnie lived there. This is the only known photo of the hotel, which was demolished in 1956. Photo circa 1925.

It was 1897, and local citizens got together in what had to be one of the earliest community projects, if not the very first one, the area would see — they compiled a directory of Englewood residents.
The directory listed 86 people. Sixteen adults and 34 children were counted as year-round residents, with 36 more listed as winter visitors and fishermen.
