Eliot W. Sperry
Eliot W. Sperry, 90, of Arcadia, Fla., passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
Mr. Sperry was born in New Jersey, and lived in Maryland.
He served as staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Mr. Sperry was Postmaster of the Lutherville-Timonium Post Office in Maryland, until he moved his family to Florida. He owned gas stations in Dania Beach, Fla., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In 1977, he moved to Arcadia, where he and his family enjoyed living in the country along the Peace River. Mr. Sperry subsequently moved to Arcadia Village after the death of his wife, Roberta M. “Bobbie” Sperry, where he found a different but equally happy life. He was member of First Presbyterian Church of Arcadia, serving as Elder. Mr. Sperry was a proud member of the VFW, serving at posts in Fort Lauderdale and Arcadia. At the latter, he served for many years as Quartermaster.
He is survived by daughters, Susan R. Bogart of Tampa, Fla., and Patricia M. (Mark) Castigione of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Jason and Nickolas (Kristen) Castigione; and dear friend, Maria Mazanek. Mr Sperry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbie; and son, Bruce Sperry.
Visitation will be conducted from 11 p.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013, from the chapel of Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home, 50 N. Hillsborough Ave., Arcadia. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Will Browne officiating. The DeSoto Honor Guard, of which Mr. Sperry was a member, will render military honors at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
